Mission Statement

Suite Quiz is primarily a vocabulary development site dedicated to students in grades 8 through 12.  It is my mission to assist you to bring your  vocabulary command and your reading comprehension skills up to a level commensurate with your innate ability.

What does the previous statement mean?  It simply implies that most of us have not yet developed a vocabulary command that is equal to our inborn ability.  Why?

Before we make further advances,  I wish to put forth a question.  From the following list, decide which field of study you consider the easiest and which the hardest and be prepared to answer why.

1. Mathematics  2. Language   3. Social Studies            

4.  Science    5. Geography

Is your best subject say Science because you like it or do you like it because you are good at it?   Relax.  There is no right answer and no wrong one. The question remains food for thought.  It is much easier to work on something you enjoy doing.  You might just be able to derive enjoyment from improving your English and Social Studies marks to such an extent that you make your teachers incredulous.

Avenues to Vocabulary Enhancement

1.  Class instruction

2.  A wide variety of reading

3.  Conversation.  

4.  Word study

5.  Word consciousness.  

1.  Make it a practice to expand on teacher's definitions by resorting to specialized dictionaries or other reference sources. 

2.  Read the newspaper every day and not just the comics.  Emphasize short stories over novels.

3.  If you do not understand a particular word rectify   the deficiency by asking.

4.  Go to word focus.

5.  At the library look up word derivations in an etymological dictionary or other reference source, not to be confused with entomological.
